The most visible, ongoing volunteer activity is seen in the Greenhouse/Nursery, situated next to the Kohl Pumphouse. A three-room indoor greenhouse and workshop is surrounded by an outdoor area which includes several hundred square feet of plant tables – all in a beautiful park environment.
This is where the joy of gardening is unleashed! Teams of volunteers dedicate much time on weekday mornings to propagate and care for plants and we are open for plant sales on weekends. The objective: to share the joy by selling the plants to the public at excellent (i.e. low!) prices. And, of course, generously share information, advice and experience – free for the asking.
All plants in the Greenhouse and Nursery have been donated – either by commercial supporters, community residents or, of course, San Mateo Arboretum Society members and/or volunteers. Because of this, we are able to offer many unique specimens not easily found elsewhere. Savvy customers know to check often for the arrival of new and unusual donations.

We accept donations of plants, divisions, cuttings, pots and garden ornaments. The best times to drop off donations are weekday mornings 10am-12:30pm during volunteer work hours or during sale hours on weekends noon-3pm. If these times don't work, contact us to arrange another time. If you do NOT want a donation receipt, you may simply leave your donations at any time outside our main gate (entrance to the Pumphouse and Victorian Garden) or the north gate (entrance to the nursery).
For outdoor/landscaping, our extensive collections of geraniums and pelargoniums (many fragrant!), bearded iris, Victorian & heirloom plants, roses, brugmansia & datura, bush impatiens, fuschias, as well as many bunch grasses, ground covers & vines are constantly popular. Seasonal herbs and vegetables are available . Our collection of succulents includes dozens of varieties, many dramatically planted in terra cotta pots. Many of our for-sale plants are from cuttings or divisions of those in our demonstration garden, where the source plants already in the ground help buyers better understand their appearance and behavior in their own garden.

Indoor varieties include tropical vines, bromeliads, ficus and other small indoor shrubs, hanging plants, begonias and other traditional favorites. An entire room contains many types of orchids. A visit to the Greenhouse/ Nursery is a lively experience. Shoppers rarely leave without one or many unique – sometimes eclectic – plant(s) and a very contented smile.
