2020 SCHEDULE
PERENNIAL GARDEN VOLUNTEER TRAINING
Help maintain & beautify the San Mateo Arboretum perennial gardens while learning how to take care of your perennials. Training consists of an introduction and lecture followed by hands on pruning in the garden. At completion, you will be given a green vest that will identify you as a volunteer. You will then be able to work in the garden at your convenience. Future classes will be offered as the seasons change. We ask that you commit to volunteering a minimum of 4 hours/month. You must be a member of the San Mateo Arboretum Society. You may join on March 21 or at www.SanMateoArboretum.org. Bring garden clippers & gloves. Registration required

Since 1999 Jack McKinnon has been providing outstanding service to clients around the San Francisco Bay Area, drawing upon his 35 years of gardening experience to solve their gardening needs. Jack honed his trade for 12 years as a Sunset Magazine gardener. As well as garden coaching, Jack also writes regular gardening columns for several Bay Area magazines, and has served as a board member for the San Mateo Arboretum.Jack McKinnon is the owner of The Garden Coach, a garden consulting business. He has been a gardener for over 35 years and worked in the Sunset Magazine gardens for 12 years. He has made numerous media appearances including Real Estate Weekly TV, Mountain View Public TV. He has a regular monthly column in the Palo Alto Weekly, Coast Views Magazine and the Mountain View Voice. Jack has given a pruning demonstration to a packed room at the San Francisco Garden show. He was a board member of the San Mateo Arboretum Society and has been a member of the Royal Horticultural Society, California Native Plant Society and Santa Cruz Arboretum. The San Francisco Peninsula Camellia Society (https://camelliasfpcs.org) experts will teach you how to shape your Camellia bushes to encourage beautiful profuse flowering with pruning and proper care. After instruction, you will have the opportunity to learn by pruning SM Central Park’s Camellias. Bring pruning shears and gloves. Heavy rain cancels.

Edible Container Gardening with Laurel Nagle (tentative)

Laurel Nagle is a professional gardener and the owner of Every Bloomin’ Thing, a subscription container gardening service providing seasonal color to homes and businesses along the Peninsula. She has been a Master Gardener since 2009 and has a Landscape Architecture degree from UC Berkeley Extension. Laurel has given presentations throughout the Bay Area on various aspects of Container Gardening as well as Edible Gardening, Beginner Basics, and Seasonal Planting Design.

You bring a 6-8 inch wide uncarved pumpkin with stem on and we will supply instruction, a variety of succulents and other natural materials, glue supplies and accessories you will need to create a beautiful fall decoration. HOLIDAY FLOWER DESIGNS w/ Liane Benedict
Liane grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and graduated from Stanford with a degree in Human Biology and Neurophysiology. Liane worked in early childhood education for 10 years before moving to investment management for 15 years. Tired of 50+ hour work weeks and lots of stress, she quit her job and began taking a number of different classes from music to tap dance. Liane began taking floral design classes at College of San Mateo (CSM) in the Fall of 2002. She won awards for her theme design in the student competition at the 2003 American Institute of Floral Designers National Symposium in St. Louis. In 2007, she earned a Certificate in Floral Design from CSM. After rigorous testing, she became a California Certified Florist in 2010. In 2013 she became Vice President of Floral Artists of the Bay Area (FAB), a floral club. She worked at Ah Sam Florist in San Mateo from 2002 to 2007. Since then she is employed as a part-time designer at Redwood City Florist on Woodside Road. Liane has assisted with Bouquets to Arts, the Filoli Floral Show, and other community floral events. She has taught beginning floral design classes through the San Mateo College Community Education program and continues to give floral design demonstrations. Liane lives in Belmont with her wonderful husband.

WREATH WORKSHOP
Bring your imagination, pruning shears & light weight gloves. Using fresh colorful greens from San Mateo Central Park, you will be able to create a one-of-a-kind beautiful wreath. This is a family activity, children ages 5 - 12 with accompanying adult are welcome. All material provided including seasonal embellishments such as ribbon, cones and more!
